Fundamentals of Graduate Economics and Finance: Student Diary 2026
My Oxford Summer School Experience
By Daniela Colorado Gruintal, 2026 Alum
Attending the Fundamentals of Graduate Economics and Finance 2026 course was a genuinely memorable experience. It wasn't just about the academic content, but also about getting a realistic sense of what studying at Oxford actually feels like.
One of the things I enjoyed the most was being part of such an international and diverse group of students; we had people from India, Ukraine, Australia, Mexico, the Netherlands, China, the UK, and many other places. Even with such different backgrounds, a shared interest in economics made it very natural to connect with everyone. It was a great opportunity not only to learn from the course but also to exchange ideas and make friends with people from around the world.

The course structure itself exceeded my expectations. Having lectures with Oxford faculty followed by small-group tutorials with alumni gave us a clear view of their teaching style. The tutorials were easily the most practical part, as we could work through specific problems and ask direct questions. I also appreciated how open the tutors were about discussing graduate applications and life at Oxford, which helped me identify what I still need to work on before applying for a Master’s.
The programme was not only about academics; we also had activities such as the welcome drinks and the punting session, which gave us the chance to experience a little of what student life in Oxford is like. One of my favourite experiences was the formal dinner at Linacre College, which made the evening very special and gave us a better idea of what student life at Oxford is like. I also enjoyed walking around the city, visiting the colleges, cafés, and libraries, and spending time with the friends I made during the course.
Another thing I really liked was how well the course was organised; the schedule gave us enough time to attend lectures, participate in tutorials, study on our own, and still have free time to explore Oxford or simply relax. I think this balance made the experience much more enjoyable. I should also mention that the meals were always delicious, and the coffee breaks were another great opportunity to chat with other participants and recharge before the next lecture.

Although I did not stay in one of the Oxford colleges, there were different accommodation options available, including hotels and Airbnbs, so it was possible to find something that suited different budgets and preferences.
For anyone considering a Master’s in Economics or Finance, I would definitely recommend this programme. I would encourage future participants not to worry if they do not have a perfect mathematical background. A good foundation helps, but one of the main values of the course is showing you where you currently stand and what to focus on next.
I left Oxford with a clearer academic direction, valuable insights, and great friends. It was a genuinely motivating experience that confirmed my decision to pursue graduate studies.
