Department of Economics develops new Future Global Strategists Summer School with DPIR and Oxford Saïd

The Department of Economics has developed a new two-week residential summer school with the Department of Politics and International Relations (DPIR) and Oxford Saïd Business School for students aged 16–18.

Building on the success of the AI and Machine Learning Pioneers Summer School, the new programme expands the Department’s growing offer of summer schools for young people.

The Future Global Strategists Summer School will take place in Oxford in early August 2027. It will introduce students to how economics, politics and technology shape international affairs, including how governments, businesses and international organisations respond to changes in the global landscape.

The programme is led by Professor Banu Demir Pakel of the Department of Economics and Professor Lucas Kello of DPIR. It will cover topics including global power shifts, trade and economic statecraft, artificial intelligence, cyber power, semiconductor competition and energy security.

Professor Banu Demir said:

"What excites me about this programme is the opportunity to show students how economics can help us make sense of some of the big changes we see in the world today, while bringing in perspectives from politics and technology. I hope they’ll leave with a better understanding of how these different forces interact, and with lots of new questions to think about.”
