Jenni Scott

Jenni describes herself as a Geoscientist and Explorer, having studied Geological Sciences before embarking on a career in global energy exploration.

Now a Business Opportunity Manager (for Crude trading) with Shell, Jenni completed the ‘Economics for Business Leaders’ programme in 2022 and tells us about her experience.

Why did you decide to join the Economics for Business Leaders Programme?

Having worked in mostly technical roles, my economics understanding had come mainly through exploration projects.

What the Oxford Elevate programme offered brought together so many different strands, from the macro to the micro, which helped me put my professional experience into an economic context.

How have you used learning from Oxford Elevate in your Work?

I thoroughly enjoyed the sessions on Game Theory and have brought that scenario thinking into some of my most recent projects.

Sharing experiences with others on the course from different industries (Banking, FMCG, Charity sector) really enriched the discussions.

I also felt Oxford Elevate equipped me to better understand the economic lead-up to and fall-out from Liz Truss’s UK prime minister-ship, which happened in the months following our residential week in Oxford.

What impact has Oxford Elevate had on your career? And for you personally?

The content of the course has definitely enriched my professional experiences and with it I feel equipped to ask the right questions across a range of topics and sectors.

My professional network has grown, both inside and outside of my company, and I enjoy being part of the Oxford Elevate alumni community?

What advice would you give to somebody enrolling on the Economics for Business Leaders programme?

Do the pre-work! Even if you already have a working understanding of economics when you enrol, the content is very well put together and engaging.

During the residential week, Oxford Elevate’s tutorial-style teaching is very inclusive and provides a deeper understanding, though you’ll get the most out of it if you come well-prepped.

Also be open to sharing your ‘real life’ experience in the tutorials, as well as listening and learning from others.
