Professor Andrew Scott Returns to Oxford as Visiting Professor of Economics

The Department of Economics is pleased to welcome Professor Andrew Scott back to Oxford as a Visiting Professor. An Oxford alumnus, Professor Scott completed both his undergraduate and DPhil in Economics here. He is now a globally recognised economist whose research on longevity and ageing has shaped academic thought, policy, and public debate.

His work examines how longer lives and demographic shifts impact economies – from fiscal pressures to opportunities for longevity-driven growth. His work explores how we can deliver a longevity society rather than an ageing society by focusing on changes in how we age rather than changes in the age structure of the population. In particular he focuses on the economics of longevity and how we invest in later life human capital to ensure that life isnt just longer but also healthier, productive and engaged for longer. His publications include leading journal articles and acclaimed books such as The 100-Year Life and The Longevity Imperative, both of which were runners up in the FT Business Book of the Year award.

During his three-year term, Professor Scott will engage with students and faculty through seminars and discussions. This year, he will contribute to the MPhil in Economics by offering an option in Economics of Longevity and Ageing, reinforcing the Department’s focus on longevity, wellbeing, and sustainable growth.

Professor Scott is Senior Director of Economics at the Ellison Institute of Technology, Professor at London Business School, and a Research Fellow at CEPR. He has held academic roles at All Souls College, LSE, and Harvard, and served in advisory positions with HM Treasury, the Bank of England, and others.

We warmly welcome Professor Scott back to Oxford and look forward to the insight, collaboration, and inspiration his appointment will bring to the Department and the wider economics community here at Oxford
