Agricultural transformation in Tanzania: Linking rural to urban through domestic value chains

Gollin D, Goyal R

Agriculture remains one of the most important sectors of the Tanzanian economy. The sector accounted for about 30 per cent of the country’s measured gross domestic product (GDP) in 2013 and employed approximately three-quarters of the workforce (World Bank, World Development Indicators; Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, FAOSTAT).1 Agriculture also plays a significant role in terms of the country’s external balance, generating about one-third of exports (UN COMTRADE [United Nations Commodity Trade Statistics Database] data, compiled by the Observatory of Economic Complexity)
