The Department of Economics is delighted to congratulate Professor Tony Venables, Senior Research Fellow, on his appointment as President of the Royal Economic Society (RES).
The RES is one of the UK's leading learned societies for economics, supporting research, education and public engagement across the discipline.
Tony began his one-year term as President following the Society's Annual General Meeting, succeeding Professor Imran Rasul. He will serve alongside President-Elect Professor Dame Diane Coyle.
As President, Tony will help shape the Society's work in supporting the economics profession, encouraging the next generation of economists, and promoting a wider understanding of economics and its contribution to public policy.
Commenting on his appointment, Tony said:
"It’s a great honour to have this role, and an opportunity to further develop the RES’s role in supporting the profession and to extend its activity in promoting the understanding of economics in society."
Founded in 1890, the RES promotes the study of economics through its journals, conferences, education initiatives and public engagement activities. It plays a central role in supporting economists across academia, government, business and the wider public sector.
The Department warmly congratulates Tony on his appointment and wishes him every success during his presidency.
