The University of Oxford’s Department of Economics is pleased to announce EBC Financial Group as the sponsor for this year’s special episode of What Economists Really Do (WERD). This marks EBC Financial Group’s second consecutive year of support for the series, reinforcing their commitment to broadening public understanding of key financial and economic issues.
Now in its fourth successful year, What Economists Really Do has become a leading forum for discussing contemporary economic challenges. This year’s special event, titled “Macroeconomics and Climate,” will be held on Thursday, November 14, 2:30–4:00 PM at the Sir Michael Dummett Lecture Theatre, Christ Church. The event will feature a keynote address by Professor Andrea Chiavari, who will examine the pressing question, “Can we grow the economy and save the planet?” Drawing on cutting-edge research from Oxford and beyond, Professor Chiavari will explore how macroeconomic strategies can drive climate action while promoting economic growth, offering valuable insights into the future of sustainable economies and carbon taxation.
Following the keynote, a panel discussion, “Sustaining Sustainability: Balancing Economic Growth and Climate Resilience,” will bring together Professor Chiavari, Dr Nicola Ranger (Director of the Resilient Planet Finance Lab), and David Barrett (CEO of EBC Financial Group UK Ltd), chaired by Professor Banu Demir Pakel. This is a first WERD episode to include a panel discussion, fostering more inclusive public dialogue on how economics is shaping the world we live in. The discussion will delve into diverse perspectives on the economic impacts of climate change and balancing growth with environmental resilience.
EBC Financial Group’s sponsorship will support the Department’s mission to drive innovative research and provide world-class education. This funding will enhance opportunities for students, researchers, and faculty to engage in pioneering work that addresses today’s most critical economic challenges.
What Economists Really Do: Macroeconomics and Climate is free and open to the public, both in person and via live-stream. Recordings of previous WERD episodes on topics like tax evasion and the political economy of AI are available on the Department’s YouTube channel.
