Each year, the University of Oxford recognises academic excellence with the Recognition of Distinction Scheme. This year, we are delighted to announce that the title of full professor has been conferred upon Professor Elizabeth Baldwin (Professor of Economics), Professor Jean-Paul Carvalho (Professor of Political Economy), and Professor Banu Demir (Professor of Economics).
Elizabeth’s research focuses on microeconomic theory and environmental policy, using mathematical tools to inform market design and then applying this in practice, especially in environmental contexts. Jean-Paul’s work centres on political economy and social dynamics, contributing to emerging fields such as the economics of identity, culture, religion and the political-economic risks of AI. Banu’s research lies at the intersection of international trade and development economics, focusing on how firms adjust to trade-related shocks and how their adjustment shapes the aggregate economic outcomes such as growth and income.
Importantly, the Recognition of Distinction award acknowledges not only sustained research achievement, but also excellence in teaching and citizenship. All three colleagues are making significant contributions to the running of the department, and the conferral of the title of professor suitably recognises their leadership and service across all areas of our community.
Professor Johannes Abeler, Head of Department, commented:
“These are wonderful and well-earned achievements. I wholeheartedly congratulate Banu, Jean-Paul, and Elizabeth. Their work exemplifies the excellence in research, teaching, and leadership that we strive for in our department. I particularly appreciate their ongoing support and active leadership in the running of the department, which is invaluable. It is fitting to see their contributions rewarded in this way.”
