Department of Economics alumnus Hyun Song Shin nominated as Governor of the Bank of Korea

The Department of Economics is proud to recognise the nomination of Hyun Song Shin as Governor of the Bank of Korea. A distinguished alumnus of our department, Professor Shin has built an exceptional career spanning academia, public policy, and global financial leadership.

Professor Shin studied at Oxford, completing a BA in Philosophy, Politics and Economics before going on to earn an MPhil and DPhil in Economics at Nuffield College. He later held academic appointments at Oxford, before building an international career at the highest levels of economic research and policy.

In 2010, while on leave from Princeton, he served as Senior Adviser to the Korean President, taking a leading role in shaping financial stability policy in Korea and helping to develop the G20 agenda during Korea’s presidency. Most recently, he served as Economic Adviser and Head of the Monetary and Economic Department at the Bank for International Settlements, where his work has helped shape international thinking on financial stability, monetary policy, and banking.

Professor Shin’s nomination is a fitting recognition of his expertise and leadership in economics and finance. We extend our warmest congratulations to Hyun Song Shin and look forward to the contribution his leadership will make at the Bank of Korea.
