Supporting Postgraduate Study

Doctoral Studentships

At present, the Department is able to offer a two year Doctoral Studentship equivalent in value to two-thirds of a UK Research Council[1] postgraduate award to students who transfer from the MPhil to the DPhil in Economics and who have no other source of funding. It is our aim to increase the value of our Doctoral Studentships to provide a level of support at least equal to a RCUK award. The sum of £10,000 per year, matched with the departmental funding, would enable us to achieve this goal.

MPhil Scholarships.

The MPhil is the vital first step on the path to becoming a professional economist – whether it be in academia, the public service or in the private sector. The funds available to support students taking a taught postgraduate programme are very limited. The sum of £29,000, matched with department funding, will provide a two-year MPhil scholarship to cover university and college fees and provide a maintenance award equivalent to that offered by RCUK.

[1] In 2016/17 an ESRC postgraduate studentship will provide a maintenance award of £14,296 plus an Economics Enhanced Stipend of £3,000 p.a.
