Research Interests
Summary: Development economics - labour markets, income distribution, human capital, subjective well being, economic growth, with application to China and Africa.
China is perhaps the most interesting economy in the world, but one of the least researched. My research is concerned with income distribution, human capital, labour markets, and economics welfare in dynamic transition. My book “Towards a labour market in China” won the Richard A. Lester Prize for "the outstanding book in Labour Economics and Industrial Relations published in 2005". My new book "China's Remarkable Economic Growth" was published by OUP in April 2012. Methodology: empirical analysis, based on sample surveys, which I help to design. Modalities: largely externally funded research (e.g. Leverhulme Trust, DFID, ESRC, Nuffield Foundation), employing research officers and collaborating with top Chinese economists.
